At one time or another, many of us need to share a file or two with somebody, and often the attachment size limits put in place by most email providers make this task difficult, if not impossible. As we all know, file sizes have been increasing steadily for quite some time. Even a regular PDF document or a PowerPoint presentation can easily surpass 10-20 MB nowadays. There are many file sharing services online that will gladly host your file online for free, but what if you don't want your file to be stored forever? Especially in the case of a personal document. Crate is a website that lets you upload and share files, which remain on the internet for exactly 30 minutes. I chose to share this website because it has no banner ads or any of the assorted spam elements. Also, since the file remains on the servers for only 30 minutes, you have fewer worries about your personal information being exposed to some of the other dangers of the internet. If you choose, you have the option of extending this time limit, by signing up for an account. However, if your intention is to share the file for the predetermined time, there is no need to sign up. The process is virtually done in one click. You drag and drop the file on top of the "crate" on the main page and it starts uploading the file right away. The process is usually rather quick, but ultimately depends on your internet connection and the size of the file. As soon as the file is uploaded, a link is generated which you can share with anyone you want. This generated link as I mentioned previously, is valid for thirty minutes, but can be extended by signing up for an account, which is a very easy process and gives you the ability to keep track of all your uploads and various files that you have shared. If you have Google's suggestions turned on, try typing just "why does" into it and then stop. Look at the second suggestion. WTF? That's the secondmost-popular entry in the "why does" category?!

Email can be a lot of pressure. Anyone who has gone to work on a Monday morning and faced an inbox full of emails that require attention will agree with me. Since procrastination is a favorite human pastime, most people don't want to reply to the e-mails received right away. In fact, most of us don't even want to open them to see what is inside.
Gmail came up with a new feature that lets you take a sneak peek at your emails without opening them. This serves two purposes. One, you don't have to spend hours opening every email that you get. By taking a quick peek you can decide whether you want to tackle it right away or not. For example, when you are paying the bills online and you don't want to reply to an email from your golf buddy. Also, since the mails remain unopened, they remain highlighted as unread mails, reminding you to reply to them later. To enable the Gmail Message Sneak Peek, Log onto your Gmail account and click on Settings over at the top right corner. Once you click on that, you will be presented with a page full of options, tabs and radio buttons. Look for the tab towards the right which says Labs. Once you click on it, you will see another page, full of options. These Google folks are spoiling (and confusing) us with all these options. Scroll down the list and find the option called Message Sneak Peek or simply press Ctrl+F to search, type sneak peek in the dialog box and press Enter. Once you locate that option, click on Enable, scroll down the page and click on the Save Changes button. Once back in the Inbox, right click on any email message to preview it. Another added benefit is that while previewing a message, you can Archive or Delete it in one easy click without opening the message at all. You can also mark it as unread, even if it's been opened. Is this awesome or what? This is ideal for people who deal with a lot of email, or for people who are just lazy and don't want to open every single mail to see what's inside. Once you start using it, you will wonder how you ever got along without it. |
