BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

Yes, the time has come to do the first informal testing. No implying anything at all on CUDA/OpenCL, just looking how well it runs for WCG, 6.10.4 just out, some internal builds to learn about the code to include the assurance that it is and remains 'save'.

Anyone who's running this or future 6.10 releases is invited to report on issues, of course the focus being the CPU part works.

- Does it work with your Proxy?
- How well behaved is the cache queue?
- Is Elapsed time reliable on all WCG projects (does the DCF/cache go haywire)?
- How well does it install?
- Does it migrate the project data properly?
- Anything else relating to stability/reliability.
- Does it run well for those testing this on the Windows 7 RC platform. What 'gotchas' there?

Note that features on the BOINC Manager simple/advanced are not of prime interest, it's the stable running, but if you think there is a 'must have'

Yes, you can't crunch GPU while using the computer unless you can stand the large price of for instance the slow screen updating, the ATI addition / OpenCL enabling still in it's infant shoes.

It has to be said though it might hurt a few souls: "Not for beginners". An official 6.10 Beta program will be announced, if it gets to a level of satisfaction warranting that, but that's months and months away is my feel. For an outline on the program see the wiki article BOINC beta testing

NB: This post will be updated if other items come to the fore that need looking at.

Let it rip, but keep it kid-friendly plz, your time in sharing your points much appreciated. Illustrations such as client message log pieces with expanded log features activated in the cc_config.xml and screenshots helping to understand each case.

PS: on 6.6 see this thread http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,26724 for x-reference of other known issues.

PPS: No you will not be beat up for daring to run an alpha client on WCG :D

Re: BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

Anyone who's running this or future 6.10 releases is invited to report on issues, of course the focus being the CPU part works.

v6.10.4 seems to want to run most if not all work in "High Priority", and atleast for CUDA-users there's been reports of undesirable effects...

So, maybe it's better to wait for v6.10.5 instead...

Note that features on the BOINC Manager simple/advanced are not of prime interest, it's the stable running, but if you think there is a 'must have'

One feature worth mentioning is the new "Show active tasks"-tab on the Task-tab. This is a nice addition, especially if you've got lots of cached work.

PS: on 6.6 see this thread http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,26724 for x-reference of other known issues.

Don't hibernate so no idea on #2, and #3 is most likely due to #1. For #1, never seen anything to it, not even any of the CPDN-wu's seems to be affected by this... confused

"Show active tasks" seems like I saw a tab for this from inception of BOINC.net by Mike O.

Re: BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

No problems so far on the CPU front. Tasks are running as normal. Only thing I would flag is the repeated attempts of the client to fetch GPU specific tasks...which obviously fail. Anyway if its of any use here's my log:

Re: BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

Since my last post everything seems to have been working as normal....until I restart the machine. Now it no longer connects to the localhost. Have tried going to select computer under the advanced tab and trying to connect to localhost but it just gives an error message saying boinc was unable to connect to client. Have tried restarting a few times but to no avail. Any suggestions?

There's been many reports of this problem with earlier alpha-builds, and apparently it's not fixed in v6.10.4 either. I've had this twice with v6.10.x, both instances exiting BOINC Manager and re-starting the Manager fixed the problem, but it's not certain it will work for you.

Also, checking any firewalls and similar will maybe help, but again if it will help or not is uncertain.

Not sure if this bug has been tracked-down yet, but next build should atleast have some bug-fixes to scheduling...

Re: BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

Well the first try was short and felt like the return of the Alien that ate my Buick. 6.10.4 and the Vista Firewall, though thoroughly, thoroughly disabled popped up as were we back in the very first days for Vista and 5.10. It asked for permission to start the BOINC Manager. Then benchmarks ran and had kept popping up the 'connecting to... ' frame and started eating one by one through the tasks in the buffer. Fortunately, a backup on hand and the wifi dongle pulled so it could not tell WCG of the mayhem. Restored the Backup and returned to the last stable client.

I'll wait for the next after release + 1 week listening to the experiences with that one.

cool

Re: BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

I have been running BOINC 6.10.6 for two days on a XP SP3 32-bit machine. I thought I would try it there before putting it on a Win7 64-bit machine. Results:

CPU
I’ve had no problems running WCG, GenLife, Milkyway (CPU) Collatz (CPU) or CPND. No noticiable other problems including Long Term Debt.

GPU
It is now “possible” to run SLI (multiple GPU’s on one work unit). I have not tried this yet and am not sure if any science supports it yet.

So far, Collatz (GPU) and Milkyway (GPU) wu’s run without problems. Unfortunately the new GPUGrid application “Full-atom molecular dynamics 6.69 (cuda)” will not run ANY work on GTX260 cards and that’s what is in my XP machine. GPUGrid just released this app today so I am not sure if the problem is with GPUGrid's 6.69 (cuda) app or BOINC 6.x.x. I do know it is not working for 6.6.36 or 6.10.6 using nVidia driver 190.38 and CUDA 2.3.

I will probably put it on a Win7 64-bit machine with a GTX285 card tomorrow.

I would not recommend this release yet to any GPU crunchers. Cheers!

Re: BOINC 6.10 Alpha Testing

I fell back to 6.6.36. While not seeing any CPU problems, I got a lot of GPU problems with 6.10.6. Large increase in comp errors (MW and collatz) and failure to request new work. I was unable to get it to run at GPUGrid.

Oh well .... nothing ventured ... nothing gained. biggrin
