Re: New projects announced!

"very cautious"?

Think secretive.

Would not suprise me if "For your eyes only!", was not a joke.

Re: New projects announced!

This article is in Portuguese and it isn't official although it quotes some scientists but with no sources.

http://robertobr.blogspot.com/2011/04/world-community-grid-wcg-diminuira-o.html

Use Google translator to read it.

Short story, it says that it will be in it's final stage in the end of the second semester of 2011 and explains what will be done in the project.

Again, it's not official

Here the translation link: http://translate.google.it/translate?hl=en&am...grid-wcg-diminuira-o.html

Think it's the 3rd of 3 that was originally announced in the ''water'' related projects, this one from Brazil. Curious he's talking of finishing in 2nd half of 2011 even before the project is beta tested... suspect something, no a few things got changed in translation ;D

Re: New projects announced!

Perhaps the WCG will run separate Water related projects simultaneously; maybe the single project title "C4CW" does not adequately cover all three.
Something definitely lost in translation; he-she-he-he-she

The 'water' label was a theme of that press release. These projects all run independently. C4CW has about zero zilch to do with the Virginia and Brazil projects.

It's so funny btw, that of all places, in Virginia a research project is undertaken how to stem the rising waters. Saw this image yesterday, the house is save but would not spend a minute of sleep there, of somewhere in the USA... At first I thought this was fake because the water wavy pattern also sits in part of the roof when zooming, but could be an artifact:

The image is subtitled: No Man IS and island!

It really says it will be finishing in the second semester of 2011.I find it hard to believe though. They say there will be 180 targets.Since there will be millions of compounds for each target I don't think it will end in 2011

Re: New projects announced!

Let me do a wild guess:
They say it would take their own 'slightly more than 200 computers' between 5 to 10 years to finish this project.

Let's say it's 210 computers
Let's say it's all quad cores
Let's say it would finish in 8 years
Let's say they run 24/7
(that's a lot of 'let's say's')

Then it will be 210*4*8 = 6720 CPU years for this project.
A typical project here at WCG does 2000 CPU years per month.
Project would finish within 3.5 months then!

Just a stab in the dark though...

Re: New projects announced!

Back to the press releases where the numbers are discussed.

http://www.schistosomaonline.com.br/index.php...Alatest-news&Itemid=2
They will use the World Community Grid to screen up to 13 million compounds found in the zinc.docking.org database against 180 protein structures involved with the parasite.

Maybe it was "... nearing completion... to go live"? ;>)

We all know how many jobs and time it takes to do near 3 million compounds against a HFCC target... 5,000 CPU years a piece on AutoDock, so we'll see when the launch is there, in whatever semester.

Re: New projects announced!

Maybe they made their calculations considering the +1.2 million registered hosts instead of the aprox. 210 000 active hosts(check boincstats)
