Beta WU and port 80

I had recently set a rule for a specific box to have port 80 blocked. That box picked up one of these CEP2 WUs a couple days ago. I came home to find it had completed it, but was not able to upload it. I've been able to send and receive WCG work just fine with port 80 blocked, so I thought perhaps my network was at fault. Before doing anything, I figured I'd hit the "Retry Now" button just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. Sure enough, I received a "Boinc cannot access the internet" message.

Then, in the midst of this, WCG successfully requested more work. Again, the Beta work still showed as Pending. Again I hit "Retry Now" and had no luck. My next move was to unblock port 80 and sure enough, success!

So, is port 80 a beta only port? Am I hindering my chances of beta work by blocking port 80 on this machine? Log file posted for the curious.

Cheers,

Col323

Re: Beta WU and port 80

CEP2 return to Harvard computer at least part of the results, they may be using port 80

Re: Beta WU and port 80

Am I hindering my chances of beta work by blocking port 80 on this machine?

Irrelevant to getting Beta of any kind. Both port 80 and 443 need to be open, outward to successfully have all comm loops to work. E.g. the connection is initialized through port 443 to establish a secure connection and then handed over to port 80 for the data transfer. This reads as if when this is not possible the transmissions to WCG continue over 443 and Harvard only allowing receipt over port 80. The IP addresses are known and fixed, so if you feel unsave you could set exception for the WCG and Harvard servers in connection with port 80. Certainly my setup is that I only allow BOINC to go to known fixed IPs.
