Working GPU crunching times

Thought this would help folks decide on cards to buy/use based on crunching times of a particular GPU. Specify exact model and how long your GPU took to crunch a valid wu.

ATI HD 6950 @800MHz 197 seconds, total kernel time 90.406387, Total CPU time 106.158681

Played with the overdrive in CCC to compare.
Same card but @750Mhz 226 seconds, total kernel time 114.340820, total CPU time 111.415914

Heat from the higher settings was 71C so backed it down. Could adjust my fans but don't want to listen to a mini jet engine taking off or burn up the card. Suggest folks monitor your GPU temps so you don't burn it up prematurely.

Re: Working GPU crunching times

Thanks for starting this helpful thread, Bearcat?

Do all of these cards require their own separate power supply? Maybe folks could also post the TDP of the cards they are reporting on here.

NO gpu are internal to the machine and therefore use the machines normal power supply. That being said there is a strong likelihood that you will need to upgrade your vendor supplied power supply to run a high end gpu if your pc did not come with one. To save money normally vendors do not build in too much expandability, they want you to buy a new machine of course. MOST power supplies CAN be upgraded with little to no problems though. They are kind of like chicken mcnuggets...parts is parts! There ARE exceptions though, if you don't know how to do it ask a friend or take it somewhere, it can be an expensive mistake if you get it wrong!

Re: Working GPU crunching times

Ok, now that I've found out how to get the data regarding the time spent on the work units, here's mine:

HIS ATI Radeon 6770 HD @ 850 MHz

214 seconds, Total kernel time: 151.032333, CPU time used = 48.251109.

Wingman: unknown gpu card @ 900 MHz

228 seconds, Total kernel time: 111.858177, CPU time used = 111.681116.

Now, right after it started I turned off 1 of my 4 cpu cores so it had a free one to work with. I don't know the exact effect it had, though.

Re: Working GPU crunching times

Seeing a big variation in runtime on my HD 5870 now. From 162 seconds to 217 seconds. Seeing a lot less invalids than before so far.

It's so obvious I didn't think of it before but as the majority of task time on faster cards is spent on the CPU, then what we are actually comparing in this thread if we concentrate only on the total runtime is mainly CPU performance, not GPU performance. My Xeon W3520 @ 3.6GHz is doing OK. :)

As the GPU section of tasks appears to be partly CPU bound, then CPU speed will also be affecting the GPU kernel processing speed.
