Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.55

I'm beginning to think the 5450 is going to end up on the cards that don't work list.
It seemed to run the earlier betas just fine. As the betas have progressed, pretty much every WU has been invalid.

Here are the invalids (the only 4 I got) from this run:
BETA_ X0000038190368200409181628-- 201209282038211_ 0
BETA_ X0000038190568200409181625-- 201209282038211_ 0
BETA_ X0000038190525200409181625-- 201209282038200_ 1

Ditto for the NVIDIA GTX 580 as out of ten I got, only four were valid on my Win XP I7870

RT- Do you have a Win7 machine you could move the 580 into just to see if you can get better results. That card should tear through these GPU tasks with ease

This is getting exciting, especially after all these months of testing!

Hi Nanoprobe

If you think it will help, I can install windows 7 on that machine. My other machines that have Windows 7 on them do not have big enough power supplies on them for me to move that 580 onto them. I suppose that I need to go ahead and buy bigger power supplies for one or two of them just to get ready for when the GPU projects go live. Right now they have 380w PSs. I am holding off buying GPUs (apart from the aforementioned) in order to find which kind performs best (best bang for the buck). After thinking about it, I will just go ahead and install that win7 on that machine and go ahead and order some larger PSs for the other machines; none of that should change.

Oh BTW The valid work units (4 out of 10), ran in .22, .23, .23 and .23 CPU Hours.

Thank You for your help.

If you have Win7 64 bit I think that would work best. I had problems with the newer Nvidia drivers on my XP box too.
As for PSUs, that is one place you don't want to cut corners. I've been slowly updating since January. I look for sales from Newegg, Amazon whoever. I look for at least 80 bronze rated and I prefer they be SLI/CF ready but that is not a must. I would guess your 580 would need at least a 500 watt PSU but my rule of thumb is to have a PSU run at or near 50% of it's rated power when it's under full load. That is where most of them are the most efficient and that gives you some overhead room in case you want to stick a second card on the unit.

I got that puppy on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and downloaded the latest drivers from NVIDIA. I fired up a job from GPUGRID just to test it and it seems to be going well.

On the power supply front I will take your advice and go for a 650 Bronze or better (I have a Corsair AX850w in the above mentioned machine). I will get it in and install it on one of the other machines so we will be ready to get the correct GPU when the time comes. Thanks again for your advice. Regards.

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.55

RT There is something going on with the Nvidia drivers that I stumbled upon and thought I'd pass on to you and anyone else running the newest drivers. I'm also going to post this in the beta thread.
If you have the following GPUs:
GeForce 600 Series
GeForce GTX 690, GeForce GTX 680, GeForce GTX 670, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, GeForce GTX 650, GeForce GTX 660, GeForce GT 645, GeForce GT 640, GeForce GT 630, GeForce GT 620, GeForce GT 610, GeForce 605
GeForce 500 Series
GeForce GTX 590, GeForce GTX 580, GeForce GTX 570, GeForce GTX 560 Ti, GeForce GTX 560 SE, GeForce GTX 560, GeForce GTX 555, GeForce GTX 550 Ti, GeForce GT 545, GeForce GT 530, GeForce GT 520, GeForce 510
GeForce 400 Series
GeForce GTX 480, GeForce GTS 450, GeForce GT 440, GeForce GT 430, GeForce GT 420, GeForce 405
GeForce 300 Series
GeForce GT 340, GeForce GT 330, GeForce GT 320, GeForce 315, GeForce 310
GeForce 200 Series
GeForce GTX 295, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce GTX 280, GeForce GTS 250, GeForce GTS 240, GeForce GT 230, GeForce GT 240, GeForce GT 220, GeForce G210, GeForce 210, GeForce 205
GeForce 100 Series
GeForce GT 140, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GT 120, GeForce G100
GeForce 9 Series
GeForce 9800 GX2, GeForce 9500 GS, GeForce 9400 GT, GeForce 9400, GeForce 9300 GS, GeForce 9300 GE, GeForce 9300 SE, GeForce 9300, GeForce 9200, GeForce 9100
GeForce 8 Series
GeForce 8800 Ultra, GeForce 8500 GT, GeForce 8400 GS, GeForce 8400 SE, GeForce 8400, GeForce 8300 GS, GeForce 8300, GeForce 8200, GeForce 8200 /nForce 730a, GeForce 8100 /nForce 720a

Then you need this driver:http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/48847

If you have any of these GPUs:
GeForce 400 Series
GeForce GTX 470, GeForce GTX 465, GeForce GTX 460 SE v2, GeForce GTX 460 SE, GeForce GTX 460
GeForce 200 Series
GeForce GTX 275, GeForce GTX 260
GeForce 9 Series
GeForce 9800 GTX/GTX+, GeForce 9800 GT, GeForce 9600 GT, GeForce 9600 GSO, GeForce 9600 GSO 512, GeForce 9600 GS, GeForce 9500 GT
GeForce 8 Series
GeForce 8800 GTX, GeForce 8800 GTS 512, GeForce 8800 GTS, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, GeForce 8600 GTS, GeForce 8600 GT, GeForce 8600 GS

Then you need this driver: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/48771

Both drivers are named 306.23 WHQL and both have the same release date, but you'll notice the links are slightly different.
