It will be mostly a Linux and maybe an OS-X phenomena only, but if you are pulling hair and driven to despair when on these platforms, the client message log telling zippo, not a sane word from the server as to why, a good chance is it's because your system does not have the 32bit libraries to facilitate processing of sciences that are not ported to run on 64 bits. OK, the various doctors are being served. ia32-libs is obsolete. Dug a bit and found this [succesful working for me] help article at AskUbuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/216845/manuall...rch-on-ubuntu-12-10-64bit . The file to look for in e.g. Synaptic [it can still be installed on Raring] is gcc-4.7-multilib which pulls in a dozen or so additional libs, automatically. Selected, installed, restarted BOINC to be sure the client became aware with sudo service boinc-client restart (for Ubuntu ready package pulled from ppa/rpm) and CEP2/HPF2 was being pulled.

Sekerob,
It may be difficult to do at this point, but could you send me a sched_request.xml from before you were able to pull work and a sched_request.xml from after you were able to pull work? I want to recreate and see what we can do to add more info in the messages. However, that will probably wait until the 'git v 2' repo goes live and we update to the latest server code. thanks, Kevin |

Kevin,
sched_request.xml after is no problem, but how to recreate one before adding the libs?... Would require me to uninstall the libs. Not today, but will try, first run the work dry that's only 32 bit capable. All for a good cause (or maybe someone else has the situation now and catch the client in the act and copy the file, apply the fix and catch another copy of the scheduler file). Anyway, no rush given your wait on applying git v2. BTW, there's lots to be said for porting the last two sciences to 64 bit: Majorly, task stability. Where 64 bits get zero state and restart from last checkpoint when it's too busy, CEP2 and HPF2 get signal 11 and crash. Already had one of latter, and lowered the "When the CPU load is higher than ..."to 15%. Ludicrous, but pre-emptive pausing is better for 10 second blocks due spikes than crashing tasks loosing hours. |

Thanks, Sekerob. Glad I saw this before installing Raring on my test machine.

kateeiacy,
----------------------------------------Don't thank me as now I vaguely remember one of the members concluded same some months ago in response to a query and told the problem-haver to get the 32 bit libs. Missed to document it then and update the FAQ... so much for gray hair and gray cells. This is though a good opportunity for someone to repro the experience, so would be much obliged. I started with the 64 bit Raring image and installing BOINC latest from Locutus, which is a 32 bit build [are there in fact 64 bit BOINC builds for Linux?]. Then the profile I limited to find out to just CEP2 and HPF2 which I knew were only 32 bits. When work assignement gets "no work", that scheduler request record is the one to capture. Then apply the libs, and capture the one immediately after first success, when it start pulling all the application files. For Kevin, if this could be made a sticky item, at least it gets top shelf attention till a permanent/proper response message is in place. The Raring install bout will be near end of April, those doing clean surely getting to face this. cheers. edit: First result completed, no too many exits, no signal 11. qo770_ 00024_ 5-- 640 Pending Validation 3/20/13 09:15:40 3/20/13 15:11:12 5.20 70.5 / 0.0 < moi on Linux qo770_ 00024_ 4-- 640 Pending Validation 3/20/13 09:14:26 3/20/13 13:16:50 2.01 73.5 / 0.0 < racehorse? I'll be using Xubuntu rather than regular Ubuntu, but that should be similar regarding libraries. |

Rob,
Curious about something. You said that you started out with a 64-bit version of Raring, and 32-bit version of BOINC and no ia32-libs installed. If so, how did 32-bit BOINC start up and run on a 64-bit O/S without the ia32-libs? So I checked my version of BOINC and the About box says it is version 7.0.44(x86). But it was installed using the 64-bit Berkeley installer. The installer name is boinc_7.0.44_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh. The second line in the event log says Tue 19 Mar 2013 09:31:39 AM CDT | | Starting BOINC client version 7.0.44 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu I'm betting that you already have a 64-bit version of BOINC installed and that the About box is misleading. Either that is the case or something else fishy is going on. |

Pass... did not stop at that thought, but maybe it is mislabeled [the BOINC Manager]. Did ask the question how pure 'pure' is. For sure long as I've been running Linux 64 bit always seen the x86 in the BOINC about box. The Computer info page in BOINCTasks says that it's running 7.0.56 *for* x86_64-pc-linux-gnu platform.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/32bit_and_64bit As noted at top of thread, used multiarch to enable, which is mentioned in the linked article. To BOINC it does not make any difference... the 32 bit version is since about v6 able to handle 64 bit science apps. |

Rob, I didn't get to do the Xubuntu Raring install until this evening, so several things had changed since your experience.
----------------------------------------1. A couple days later daily build of Xubuntu. 2. New version of BOINC on LocutusOfBorg (listing on ppa says it's 7.0.58, although BOINC log says it's 7.0.56, so I'm not sure) 3. And of course, I'm using Xubuntu rather than Ubuntu. So my steps were (comments added): 1. Install 64-bit Raring daily build from 3/21. Reboot. 2. Install all updates. 3. Install fglrx-updates (AMD proprietary driver). Reboot. 4. Add costamagnagianfranco BOINC ppa to software repositories, and install BOINC. Comments: Synaptic said 254 additional packages were required, and on the list were ia32libs and ia32libs:multiarch 5. Change default WCG profile. I meant to change it to only HPF2 and CEP2, but accidentally set it to HPF2 and HCC instead. Comments: I immediately received 2 HPF2 WUs and (surprise) 1 HCC1 GPU WU. HPF2 WUs are running happily. So obviously I have ia32 libs and the issue didn't arise. Here's the wierd part. I didn't have the 'If my computer can process work on my graphics card, then please send me work to run on my graphics card for the projects that I have selected above' button checked when I got the HCC1 GPU WU. That WU has finished and reported. I went back and "fixed" the profile so that it now asks for GPU work, and I'm not getting any.
