1- Proteins conspire to make breast cancer cells resistant to drug treatment

"The interaction between two proteins called BCAR1 and BCAR3 is responsible for resistance to antiestrogen drugs, paving the way for improved diagnostic and treatment strategies. “Drug resistance is one of the most serious obstacles to breast cancer eradication,” said the senior study author. “Our findings suggest that strategies to disrupt the BCAR1-BCAR3 complex and associated signaling networks could potentially overcome this obstacle and ultimately lead to more-effective breast cancer therapies.”"

2- Chronic inflammation linked to 'high-grade' prostate cancer

"Men who show signs of chronic inflammation in non-cancerous prostate tissue may have nearly twice the risk of actually having prostate cancer than those with no inflammation, according to results of a new study. The link between persistent inflammation and cancer was even stronger for men with so-called high-grade prostate cancer -- those with a Gleason score between 7 and 10 -- indicating the presence of the most aggressive and rapidly growing prostate cancers."

3- First genetic link discovered to difficult-to-diagnose breast cancer sub-type

"The discovery of the genetic variant, in conjunction with other markers, could help in the development of future genetic screening tools to assess women's risk of developing invasive lobular cancer, and also gives researchers important new clues about the genetic causes of the disease and a related precursor to cancer called lobular carcinoma in situ."

4- Mutant enzyme RECQ4 connected to cancer's 'Warburg effect'

"A cancer-prone mutation of the gene RECQ4 causes its corresponding enzyme, RECQ4, to accumulate in the mitochondria. This can cause mitochondrial dysfunction, possibly explaining cancer's "Warburg effect" of preferring lactic acid fermentation over aerobic respiration to generate energy. While this study provides important clues to solving the Warburg effect puzzle, the senior author said further studies are needed on RECQ4 and p32 to better explain cancer's biological processes."

1- Source of most cases of invasive bladder cancer identified

"A single type of cell in the lining of the bladder is responsible for most cases of invasive bladder cancer, according to researchers. The study, conducted in mice, is the first to pinpoint the normal cell type that can give rise to invasive bladder cancers. It's also the first to show that most bladder cancers and their associated precancerous lesions arise from just one cell, and explains why many human bladder cancers recur after therapy."

2- Link between Down syndrome, leukemia uncovered

"A connection between people with Down syndrome and having a heightened risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukemia during childhood has been uncovered by researchers. "For 80 years, it hasn't been clear why children with Down syndrome face a sharply elevated risk of ALL," said the study's lead author. "Advances in technology -- which make it possible to study blood cells and leukemias that model Down syndrome in the laboratory -- have enabled us to make that link."

3- Cancer stem cells linked to drug resistance

"Most drugs used to treat lung, breast and pancreatic cancers also promote drug-resistance and ultimately spur tumor growth. Researchers have discovered a biomarker called CD61 on the surface of drug-resistant tumors that appears responsible for inducing tumor metastasis by enhancing the stem cell-like properties of cancer cells."

Attacking cancer indirectly : Generating immunity against tumor vessel protein in mouse study

"A novel DNA vaccine is being trialed to kill cancer, not by attacking tumor cells, but targeting the blood vessels that keep them alive. The vaccine also indirectly creates an immune response to the tumor itself, amplifying the attack by a phenomenon called epitope spreading. The team injected mice with a DNA fusion vaccine. In mouse models of three cancer types, tumor formation was delayed or prevented in mice vaccinated with the vaccine. Specifically, they found that the mouse tumors had suppressed growth, decreased tumor vessel formation, and increased infiltration of immune cells into tumors."

CHIMIOTHÉRAPIE : Dans 30% des cas, elle affecte l’emploi

"Cette étude confirme une fréquence élevée de la perte d'un emploi salarié, après un diagnostic de cancer du sein au stade précoce et le suivi d’une chimiothérapie. Les conclusions, publiées dans la revue Cancer, de l'American Cancer Society, soutiennent l’urgence de mesures visant à réduire cet effet secondaire du traitement du cancer mais aussi l’importance d’identifier les patientes qui pourraient « éviter » ce traitement ou, pour garder leur emploi, renoncer à suivre leur traitement."

CHEMOTHERAPY : In 30% of cases, it affects employment

"This study confirms a high frequency of loss of employment, after a diagnosis of breast cancer at an early stage and follow-up chemotherapy. The findings, published in the journal Cancer, the American Cancer Society, support emergency measures to reduce this side effect of cancer treatment, but also the importance of identifying patients who could "avoid" this treatment or to keep their jobs, give up to follow their treatment."
