Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

SXRXE, That is likely normal behaviour. I've noticed it happens more on older cards (my RX550 for example, has no issues while browsing or even gaming a bit while running BOINC on GPU, but if I use a much older card,it's laggy).

Klausmaus, I'm assuming the drivers are up to date? What about the GPU temperatures?
I feel like that is a software issue though.

Hi... Temperature is fine: 50C.

I guess, something collides wiith the graphic-driver of Linux.
OpenCL 1.1 Mesa 20.0.8 is installed. The Cpu/GPu supports CL2.0.

Klausmaus
If you go into Control Center, Other Drivers, does it have other/later drivers for your display hardware?

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

Got a couple dozens over night. On my Macbook Pro, they all error out immediately.
On one remote system (laptop with NVidia), they finished in 1-2min and now all sit in PVa jail, on a second remote system (desktop with Intel GPU), they also error out immediately...

Nope: No other drivers availabel...

the kernel 5.4.0-65-generic does not support other drivers of AMD for example fglrx. . The kernel is the newest for this system.

:-(

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

A question regarding getting tasks when this goes into production...

Will there be some way of controlling the balance of work between CPU and GPU on a given project? Some sites allow "GPU only" or "send me CPU work if [and only if] no GPU work is available", whilst some others treat [some of] their CPU and GPU projects as separate entities.

I can see possible issues if both CPU and GPU task allocations for a single project are taken out of the existing "Project Limits" in the device configuration:
  • If it doesn't give precedence to GPU work, a system could be unable to get GPU work if it had filled its quota with CPU work
  • If it gives precedence to GPU work, it may never be able to get CPU work if there's plenty of GPU tasks
  • If it uses the limit for CPU tasks and sends "unlimited" GPU tasks, that might cause problems for users who support more than one GPU-based project at a time, especially if the other projects have tasks that run for considerably shorter or longer times

As I understand things at present, the intention is to have a separate "queue" for OPN1 GPU tasks so they can be somewhat larger! I just wonder if a separate tasks limit will be introduced for that queue?

Cheers - Al.

P.S. So far, my (Linux) systems have run these tasks successfully on a GTX 1050Ti and a GTX 1660Ti; only seen shorties, the "slowest" of which took around 65 seconds to run on the 1050Ti or around 45 seconds on the 1660 (including the 10 seconds or so spent in AutoGrid setting things up!) Averages were nearer 35 and 25 seconds respectuvely, I hope these validate o.k. as that's impressively quick work if it's valid!

[Edited to improve the statistics and replace a '!' with a '?' !!!]

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

A batch of 16 GPU tasks came in today.
Under "Result status" they show as "BETA_OPN1_0020005_... or BETA_OPN1_0020006_..."
They completed rather quickly on an NVidia GTX-1660S and are still in status "Pending Validation".

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

I am both confused and delighted. I have two Ryzen 3950X's on Ubuntu 18.04.5, one with a GTX 1070 and the other with an RTX 2060. They run Folding 24/7. To my considerable surprise, I find that one received about 50 of the betas, and the other about 90 betas around 5 to 6 hours ago. All completed successfully, averaging about 30 seconds (they must be the CPU-sized ones). But that was with Folding still running on both cards, so they were doing double-duty. Not bad.

The surprising thing is that even though I had the "beta" selected for that location, I had the "Use my NVIDIA graphics card if possible:" set to NO. So maybe that was before the website was set up?

At any rate, glad to do it.

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

I've received 2 beta units for my INTEL NUC Hades Canyon.

the first unit has started almost 4 hours ago, shows as 100% complete in BOINC, doesn't block any compute ressources any more in taskmgr - but seems to not end.

stderr has the following content right now:

it seems the unit actually never started computing - but not sure
