Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

I installed ImDisk.
IIRC, there is an option about a service in the install. This is required for it to get the shutdown/restart notification and sync to disk. Here are the steps I followed to set it up:
1. Close all programs that might be accessing BOINC. (should be c:\ProgramData\BOINC)
2. Rename BOINC to BOINC.imdisk (the actual name is not important as long as it's different).
3. Create a new directory named BOINC in the same location.
4. Run Imdisk configuration
4a. Set size to what you want. Note that the GPU workunits require a lot more space to be allowed to download than they actually take up. So definitely oversize it otherwise you will get messages in the log that there is not enough disk space.

Note: "Allocate Memory Dynamically" is no longer recommended as it may be causing issues. Just putting the slots folder in RAM with "Allocate Memory Dynamically" unchecked is probably a better idea if you are short on RAM.
You can use the "Allocate Memory Dynamically" option checked if you do not have a ton of ram, so the ram is only used if the space actually gets used.

4b. Launch at Windows Startup
4c. I picked a drive letter, but I do not know that it is required since I used a folder mount point instead of as a drive, so it does not show up as a drive.
4d. Advanced -> Use Mount Point -> set to your boinc folder (should be c:\ProgramData\BOINC)
4e. Load Content from Image File or Folder: set this to the folder that you renamed BOINC to (c:\ProgramData\BOINC.imdisk in my example)
4f. Click OK

You can resize later by using the ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver (It is in the Start Menu and is in the control panel). I have only used it to increase the size. It normally works, but one time froze, so I normally change the size with boinc shutdown and the drive saved.

Thanks for this, it resolved the issues i was having with SSD.

But on more than one occasion when the computer restarted it has "aborted by project" all WUs that i had :(

Manually "synchronize now" on every restart? Wont catch windows update restarts though :(

Hi kinski,
Did you use the "Allocate Memory Dynamically" option?
Which version of Windows are you running?
If you open Services in the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools, is the "ImDisk Toolkit Helper Service" Running and set to Automatic Startup?
Could you post screenshots of each page of the settings for it in the RamDisk Configuration on an image hosting site and put the links here please? Something like imgbb or similar. If you have the windows "Snipping Tool", select Mode->Window Snip to just grab the window with the configuration.

Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

Hi!

No, did not use "allocate memory dynamically".
Here's my CPUz https://valid.x86.fr/a6sl7f
Here's link to host stats https://www.boincstats.com/stats/15/host/detail/7698389
Here's the screenshots https://imgur.com/a/JhW8dMc
OS is Win10Pro (v.10.0.19042)

Thanks!

Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

Thank you for all the information. Did you check this service:
If you open Services in the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools, is the "ImDisk Toolkit Helper Service" Running and set to Automatic Startup?

That is a large ramdisk! Of course, you do have 64GB of ram. smile
Do you have BOINC set to start up automatically with Windows, automatically with a delay after windows starts, or manually? I am wondering if with a ramdisk that large, maybe it is not finished loading the data before BOINC starts.

Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

That makes sense. Boinc is set to load automatically, no delay.

Imdisk settings look to be OK.

Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

There are many ways to make it startup with a delay. I prefer to use scheduled tasks.
The general gist of how to do with scheduled tasks is:
scheduled tasks->Create Task
Name it whatever you want, I used "BOINC"
Run only when user is logged in
Triggers tab -> At log on
any user
delay task for 1 minute
enabled
Actions tab -> New -> Start a program, Program/script = "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe"
Conditions tab -> I do not have anything checked

If you or anyone else needs more details, I will try to do a more detailed write up.

confused Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

Is anyone else getting delayed write failures on their RAM drive?
I am using a 6GB Ramdrive on SoftPerfect RAM disk & when I check my System Eventlogs, I am getting lots of delayed write failures for the GPU tasks (>100 in a day).

I am using an image file that saves to about SSD every 20 minutes.
Have tried NTFS & exFAT, the errors occur on either filesystem.

{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file H:\BOINC\slots\12\receptor.d.map; the data has been lost. This error may be caused if the device has been removed or the media is write-protected.

Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

I configured my SoftPerfect RAM disk to save the content during Windows shutdown.

Re: One terabyte written to my SSD since the stress test began

I already have "Save Contents to Image " enabled.
Will try disable the routine content saving.
Btw is your Hard Disk Emulation enabled or disabled?

From the manual:
Tick Hard Disk Emulation if you want to emulate a complete hard disk drive with partitions indistinguishable from a real device. Some specialised applications or disk utilities may not work with a standalone volume, producing I/O errors or simply unable to access it. If you encounter these issues, turn this setting on. The downside is that, with an extra layer of emulation, it is slower than a standalone volume. Also, if you are using an image file and choose this option, make sure the image file you create is the Hard Disk type.

Hard Disk Emulation is disabled.
Save Contents to Image is enabled.
In the dialog window of the Advanced button all is unchecked.
